Instagram thought to be working on standalone shopping app
Facebook-owned Instagram is rumoured to be developing a shopping app which would mark a significant move into e-commerce.
According to The Verge, Instagram is now planning a standalone shopping app - rumoured to be called IG Shopping - which would allow users to browse and buy goods from companies they follow, without leaving the app.
The report states that Instagram believes it is 'well-positioned' to move into the sector. In March this year, Instagram launched an in-app shopping option for UK users, which allowed companies to tag their posts with product links.
A shoppping app would provide additional revenue streams for Instagram which has over 25 million business members, two million of which are already advertising within the platform.
Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, which acquired Instagram in April 2012, recently advised that four out of every five Instagram users follow at least one business.
Facebook and Instagram did not comment on the story.
