Wickes Announces Near-Term Science Based Targets

Wickes Crawley 725 x 500

Wickes, the UK’s leading home improvement retailer, announces near-term science-based emissions reduction targets, following approval from the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative). These targets, that are focused on the company’s operations, goods and services, and use of sold products are designed to reduce Wickes’ emissions in line with the Paris Climate agreement 1.5 degree ambition. The targets are as follows:

Target 1 - Operations (Scope 1 and 2)

Wickes commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year.

This will be achieved by improved energy efficiency in Wickes stores through better lighting, heating and controls as well as moving to a renewable electricity supply and developing on site generation through solar panels.

Target 2 - Goods and Services (Scope 3.1 Goods and Services)

Wickes commits that 45% of its suppliers by emissions will have science-based targets by 2027.

This will be achieved by supporting suppliers with setting their own Science Based Targets.

Target 3 - Use of sold products (Scope 3.11 Used of Sold Products)

Wickes Group plc to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products 42% by 2030 from a 2021 base year.

This will be achieved by assessing our ranges and products to identify opportunities to make
them more energy efficient and sustainable.

David Wood, CEO, Wickes Group PLC said “At Wickes we’re building a business we can be proud of and setting these near-term targets is a significant step on our journey to decarbonise our business as part of our Built to Last strategy. With 230 stores and distribution centres in the UK, we’ve got plenty to go after to reduce our own energy usage. We also have a tremendous opportunity to support our supply partners in setting their own science based targets and we can help customers save energy in their homes by enhancing our offer of energy efficient and sustainable products and services.”

Wickes’ near-term science based targets have been developed with the Wickes’ Executive Board, the Wickes’ Responsible Business Working group, and in conjunction with carbon consultancy, South Pole, and are in line with the Science Based Targets initiative methodologies. Wickes will report on progress against each of these targets annually.
