Roomix Creates First Bespoke DIY Kit In A Box
Roomix (https://www.roomixdiy.com) is the innovative, new DIY business that is designed to take the stress out of every-day home improvement tasks and inspire the next generation of DIY novices to turn their Pinterest Boards into a reality.
Created for people who love making their homes beautiful but are keen to save money while costs continue to rocket, Roomix harnesses a combination of technology and personalised retail experience and is set to revolutionise how home improvers design, shop and do projects in their homes.
The online platform provides a tailored DIY kit in a box, containing easy-to-follow instructions, tools and precise materials. The service is tailored for each DIY project. Tap in details of the job you’re planning onto the website, answer a few simple questions relating to the task in hand and www.roomixdiy.com sends you everything you need in a box.
The business was formed during lockdown by Shona Chalmers and Mark Apter. Shona found herself struggling with completing simple tasks, having bought a property during the Pandemic.
Says Shona, ‘Initially, I found even changing a lightbulb a challenge. But, having spent all of my available income on purchasing a new home, I decided it was time to learn some practical skills. DIY quickly became my passion. I found it stimulating and rewarding and hence Roomix was created.’
Adds Shona, ‘The DIY market is worth £15 billion in the UK alone. Myself and Mark decided to seize the opportunity and launch our business at a time when home improvement has become as coveted and on-trend as fashion and beauty. We’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response and we’re looking forward to launching new products across the decorating, furniture up-cycling and shelving sectors of DIY soon.’
Here are some unique Roomix features:
- It taps into the needs of its customers by taking a project rather than product approach to DIY. This is unique in that many homeware stores are designed to operate functionally with tradespeople in mind. According to Roomix, this takes away the buzz and excitement that embarking upon a new DIY project can create.
- A tailored Roomix DIY box ensures that only the specific materials needed are included, limiting wastage and undercutting costs of other bulk buying DIY materials available.
- A project kit, with everything you need for your specific project in the correct quantities, along with “How To” instructions is boxed up and delivered to an address of your choice.
- Roomix has also created specific design tools that can be accessed via your phone to help you size and measure your project in your unique space, with a personalised layout plan to get you started
- Customers can create their DIY profile answering a few simple questions about the projects they have done and what they want to focus on next.
- A team of expert DIY’ers are always on hand on WhatsApp, Live chat or even Instagram to answer questions and advise on any area of DIY difficulty as you go.

Shona Chalmers, Co-Founder and CEO, Roomix:
Shona Chalmers is Co-Founder of pioneering DIY on-line platform, Roomix, which she launched in response to an increasing frustration with the old-fashioned, gendered DIY offerings available.
Shona felt daunted when entering any DIY store and decided to start her own venture that would empower the next generation of DIY novices to learn practical skills and build a space they felt proud of and happy to live in.
Prior to launching Roomix, Shona was in the Venture Design Team at new business incubating organisation, Founders Factory, where she worked with many young start-ups to help them get their business ideas off-the-ground.
Before joining Founders Factory, Shona was Senior Inventor at ?What If!, the Innovations Business that works with companies to help them develop new opportunities and accelerate business opportunities.
Says Shona, “I have always enjoyed developing new ideas and innovations with other like-minded people. It took the global Pandemic to persuade me that I have all the necessary qualities and experience to take the plunge and develop my own business idea. Purchasing my first home during lockdown and realising I had no extra cash to spend on home improvements was the catalyst to learning and enjoying DIY and the springboard for launching Roomix."
Outside of work, Shona enjoys undertaking all manner of DIY tasks and discovering new trends and influences within the interiors and home sector. She can often be found at Saturday morning park run or continuing her quest to find London’s best falafel wrap.
