Retailers Prepare For Small Business Saturday

Tomorrow marks Small Business Saturday - an annual event encouraging Brits to shop at local and small retailers.

Greg Zakowicz, senior e-commerce expert at Omnisend, comments: “While retailers analyse the success of Black Friday this year, another important shopping event lands tomorrow with Small Business Saturday.

“Black Friday and Cyber Monday are massive for large retailers, but businesses with smaller margins are often unable to slash discounts as hard, leaving them more likely to be overlooked.

“Thankfully, Brits are not willing to forget about them anytime soon, with our research finding that more than two fifths of consumers plan to do some of their Christmas shopping at small, independent retailers. 

“Small Business Saturday started as a partnership with the credit card provider American Express. Some of the best incentives to shop locally are still available to Amex customers, so it might pay to check what promotions they are running this year. 

“Shopping small is often synonymous with paying over the odds for something that you can get cheaper online, but this is not always the case. Smaller businesses are also more likely to feature local producers and items that are unique or too niche for a major retailer.

“This year, an American Express competition could see your favourite small business receive a grant of £10,000. All you have to do is nominate them by the time Small Business Saturday arrives. This is another easy way for Amex customers to support their local high street without spending a penny.

“Our message to retailers participating in Small Business Saturday is to make it clear if you are offering any incentives and the reasons why they should spend their money with you. If you own a physical store, even something as simple as having a board outside of your shop alerting people to the event could help bring shoppers in.”
