Mohammed Rahman, a plumber from London, has been crowned this year’s Screwfix Top Tradesperson.
Marking the 15th year of the hotly contested competition, Mohammed was presented with the coveted award at Screwfix LIVE, after going head-to-head with nine of the nation’s best tradespeople and impressing a panel of esteemed industry experts.
Mohammed, owner of Rahman Build Ltd, has more than 15 years of experience in the trade and at the final, he impressed the judges with his commitment to training both on a practical and business level. In 2016, he completed his HND in Construction Management, which he is already using to support the long-term growth plans of his business.
Mohammed’s dedication to the future of the trade and his business has seen him instil the motivation and self-belief to succeed in his apprentices which also stood out to the judges. Understanding the importance of championing future talent, Mohammed has provided funding for his current apprentice to complete his level 2 qualification.
Alongside taking home the title, Mohammed also won the ultimate trade bundle of tech, tools and training worth £20,0000. Mohammed plans to use the prize to invest in training for his team, and ultimately help him grow his business to take on three more apprentices.
Speaking at the final, Mohammed said: “To hear my name announced, was honestly a complete shock. Any one of the finalists was a worthy winner, so I’m delighted to have been crowned this year’s champion.
“For me, I’ve always thought self-belief is so important when it comes to having a rewarding career, and this is something I take the time to instil in my apprentices too. I wanted to show them from the outset I believed in them, so to prove this I funded their level 2 qualification. Winning Screwfix Top Tradesperson is as much for them as it is for me, as I want it to inspire them, and others, using my own journey to show them anything is possible!”
Jack Wallace, Marketing Director at Screwfix, said: “This year’s Screwfix Top Tradesperson was as tough a competition as any. The calibre of each of the finalists was exceptional and it was a pleasure to spend time with each of them. The passion they have for their trades stretches far beyond providing the very best work for their customers.
“From working with local primary schools to showcase what a tradesperson is, to setting up a training academy or supporting customers with accessibility needs – we heard some inspiring stories about how they are going the extra mile.
“Every finalist was a shining example of a top tradesperson, but Mohammed really stood out to the judges. His passion and drive for his trade was remarkable, but it was his aspiration to create a working environment that championed apprentices that blew us away. I am delighted to crown him as our 2024 winner, and I know he will be an incredible ambassador for us and the wider construction industry.”
This year’s judging panel included representatives from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC), and 2023 champion, Astrid Arnold.
