High Streets Saw Increased Footfall Last Week
Springboard has published footfall data for week 4 (22/01 - 28/01) noting a continued increase in footfall, driven by high streets.
Springboard High Street Index - Week 4 2023
2023 vs 2022 = +14.7%
2022 vs 2019 = -12.1%
Week-on-week = +3.3%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
Footfall across UK retail destinations rose last week from the week before, the third consecutive week on week increase. However, high streets drove this rise, whilst footfall in both shopping centres and retail parks was virtually flat on the previous week.
Footfall rose on all but one day last week from the week before, with consistently larger increases from Thursday onwards, particularly in high streets. Indeed, in high streets the uplift from the week before significantly exceeded that in shopping centres and retail parks on all but one day.
Footfall rose in all types of high street, with the largest rise from the week before in city centres outside of London. This together with the fact that Springboard's Central London "Back to the Office" benchmark outperformed Central London as a whole indicates that employees were returning to their offices in greater numbers. In fact, in city centres across the UK (excluding London) the gap from the 2019 footfall level last week was the narrowest it's been.
The relative strength of high streets was demonstrated by the fact that across the UK footfall rose from the week before in every region/nation in high streets, whilst it declined across five areas in both retail parks and shopping centres.
