Brits Spent Billions On Their Gardens In 2021
- Garden bars and rattan furniture became two of the most popular trends of 2021
Brits spent £670 on average sprucing up their gardens in 2021, totalling over £18.6bn across the UK, as people continue to invest in their own space.
A new study by garden shed manufacturer, Power Sheds, also discovered that 2021 saw a big rise in spending at garden centres as the UK moved out of lockdown and towards normality earlier this year.
With so much time spent at home in the last 18 months, spending on home and garden equipment has seen a big rise, with £697m more spent in garden centres in April-June 2021, compared to the same period in 2020. This is an increase of a third (33%) throughout the course of the pandemic.
Google search data reflected this trend, with February (809%) and March (508%) seeing huge year-on-year rises in searches for the term ‘rattan garden’ – hinting that the early months spent in lockdown saw consumers preparing their gardens for spring. ‘Garden furniture’ also saw a huge 293% rise in searches in 2021, ‘garden fire pit’ increased by 261% and ‘garden sheds’ by 96%.
As pubs were shut until April 2021, Brits turned to DIY for their beer fix with a huge increase of searches for the term ‘garden bar’ in January, February and March – an average of 339% and a high of 400% in February.
The average spending was topped by bigger projects, with £241 on average spent on renovations per household, followed by £180 spent on accessories, £140 on tools and £109 on garden toys.
Power Sheds themselves saw unprecedented growth this year, with revenue predicted to see an increase of 227% when compared to 2020.
Co-founder of Power Sheds, Jack Sutcliffe, commented on the findings:
“The pandemic has had a huge impact and those in the gardening sector have certainly seen that. The first four months of 2021 were spent in lockdown and it’s clear to see many Brits put that time to good use planning and investing in their garden so they could really enjoy their own space.
“In this time, we’ve seen a huge increase in demand for our products, including our sheds and log cabins. As we move forward into 2022, we’re excited to see this newfound love of garden care continuing!”
