To mark National Bubble Bath Day today, B&Q is encouraging the nation to reclaim their bath time, sharing an ideal bathroom design and feng shui advice to make bathrooms as relaxing and luxurious as possible.

In research with YouGov, the nation’s favourite home improvement retailer uncovered that Brits turn to taking a bath to destress and unwind with 29% saying it’s one of their ultimate ways to relax, of which 10% say a bath is their most relaxing way to unwind, actually more relaxing than having a massage (3%) or meditating (3%).

However, the cost of living appears to be changing the nation’s bath habits, with 43% of us having fewer baths now than two years ago because of concerns about the cost (42%), energy usage (40%) and saving water (37%). But whilst we might be having fewer baths than two years ago, when we do have one, we make it count by staying in the bath for longer (40%), using more bath bubbles (28%) and making it more luxurious (20%).

With 13% of people considering removing their bath altogether, B&Q is on a mission to encourage Brits to reclaim their bath time, teaming up with feng shui expert Priya Sher to design the ultimate bathroom and sharing guidance to maximise the space.

Feng Shui Expert Priya Sher says “Taking a bath helps us to switch off from the outside world because being immersed in water releases the same energy as being hugged, so it calms our minds and allows us to feel safe, protected and joyful. Making feng shui updates to your bathroom could make your precious ‘me’ time, much more enjoyable!”

Priya’s tips, used to design the ultimate bathroom space, include:

Layout – When entering a bathroom, the toilet should be the last thing you see and the bath should be the first, as this signals calm energy. Layout is key in feng shui as energy should be able to flow smoothly throughout the room, so the correct placement of the bath and toilet can uplift and balance the energy of the space.

Light – Positioning the bath next to a window is best, as it allows natural light to nourish the psyche, recharge and get in sync with nature. Any artificial lighting in the bathroom should be warm to add to the relaxing energy and for optimum feng shui, it should be positioned centrally on the ceiling to create balance.

Elements – Focusing on different elements will help bring a relaxing environment to any bathroom. Plants are a great way to balance the energy of the space as they bring nature in, while candles bring warmth and create a cosy and relaxing energy. Place them in areas around your bath eyeline to feel immersed in relaxation.

Colour – For smaller bathrooms, the ideal colours to use to add freshness are light greens, whites, off whites and light greys, as they will open up the room and provide a calming balance.

No more clutter – The bathroom should be a tranquil space, when there is physical clutter, it adds to the mind being stressed and wherever clutter accumulates, energy stagnates. To overcome this, invest in bathroom storage to put things you are not using away and keep things minimal.

To help put Priya Sher’s feng shui tips into action, B&Q has shared guidance on how to create a perfect bathroom, from renovating a space completely, to making small changes to improve the room.

Design expertise – B&Q customers can design their dream bathroom in store with a B&Q design expert. Customers will receive a link to experience their design in 360º high-definition panoramic images on their mobile or device to share with family and friends, to help visualise the space.

Your bathroom, your way – When choosing a new bathroom suite, B&Q offers a wide range of great value products to ensure your bathroom reflects your personality. From modern, stylish bathrooms to timeless traditional designs and whether fitting a small en-suite, or a large family bathroom, B&Q has got you covered.

Space saving – Size isn’t everything when it comes to bathrooms. Opting for a space saver or straight bath is a great way to make the most of a small space. Furthermore, mirrored cabinets create the illusion of more open space and slim furniture is a great space saver and provide somewhere to keep bathroom essentials.

Water and energy saving – With concerns about saving water and energy high on the agenda, B&Q offers customers helpful advice in store and online, for example with their Energy Saving Service. There are a number of bathroom solutions such as aerators for taps, low flow shower heads and cold start taps to help customers be smarter and more efficient.

Finishing touches – To complete a new bathroom or revitalise an existing space, add some great value finishing touches. From humid happy houseplants such as orchids, to pops of colour with new bathmats and towels, or relaxing candles as per Priya’s advice, you can refresh the energy of a room.

Bryony Bennett, Bathroom Buyer at B&Q says “We weren’t surprised to hear that taking a bath is one of our favourite ways to relax and unwind. Here at B&Q, we want everyone to be able to experience the joy of taking a bath, so we’re encouraging our customers to reclaim their bath time this National Bubble Bath Day.
