B&Q Bamber Bridge - latest store to divide in two
Plans to divide a DIY superstore in two, making way for a supermarket and creating hundreds of jobs, look set to be given the go-ahead.
B&Q and Morrisons submitted proposals to South Ribble Council to divide the existing store in Craven Drive, Bamber Bridge, into a smaller B&Q store and a new food store.
Now, planning bosses have recommended the project for approval, ahead of a meeting next week.
The proposal, if agreed, will mean the future of B&Q in Bamber Bridge will be secured and about 300 jobs will be created at the new Morrisons.
Two public consultation events were held in October last year before the application submissions, and a report to councillors said more than 250 people visited.
Responses to questionnaires showed 83 per cent of people supported the scheme, while five per cent were opposed to it.
A letter of objection was lodged from a resident worried about the potential of an adverse impact on retail units in Bamber Bridge.
Another letter was received from a consultant on behalf of the owner of adjacent plots at South Rings Business Park, on technical highways grounds.
However, the report said 40 letters of support were received from neighbours. Officers have recommended the application for approval, subject to conditions.
The report to the council said: “The proposed development would not have a detrimental impact on the character and appearance of the area.”
