Wyevale Nurseries’ Open Day is a blooming success

GARDEN designers and landscapers visited one of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries in Hereford yesterday (Thursday, June 30, 2016) to see its new product developments for the coming year.

The Founder and Principal at the Cotswold Gardening School, Caroline Tatham and garden designer and TV presenter, Kate Durr, were the guest speakers at the Open Day at Wyevale Nurseries.

Adam Dunnett, Sales and Marketing Director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended our Open Day. It was a great event and such a fantastic opportunity for our current and potential customers to meet our team and take a closer look at what we do and what we grow.

“During our Open Day attendees got to tour our 70-acre container nursery site where we grow more than 1.5 million plants annually, including more than 1,000 different varieties. Our team were also on hand to share their expertise in plant selection and product knowledge.

“We were thrilled to have Caroline and Kate host talks during the day. Caroline hosted a talk entitled ‘From Wyevale to Highgrove’. She put together a slide show presentation that covered the designing, building and planting of the Festival Gardens and celebrity stage at RHS Malvern Spring and Autumn shows.

“She also included examples of using Wyevale plants for large scale private client work in both renovation of historic gardens and the creation of new borders on a large scale. She then covered the exciting process of designing, building and planting the speakers stage for this year’s Highgrove Garden Festival.”

Caroline is a qualified lecturer with many years’ experience teaching professional garden design and planting design as well as practical horticulture. She is also a well-recognised garden and planting designer, who runs Cotswold Garden Design. She has mentored aspiring garden designers in the Festival Show Garden category at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.

Caroline has a number of awards to her name, including a collaboration at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and building the Celebrity Stage at RHS Malvern Autumn and Spring Shows.

Caroline said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to partner with Wyevale Nurseries during the successful Open Day. Kate and I have absolutely loved the opportunity to get down and dirty with real plants in a quality nursery while recreating the important new trends which we saw this year coming from the Chelsea Flower Show.

“I have enjoyed working with Wyevale Nurseries while creating and delivering Celebrity Stages both at the RHS Malvern Spring Show and at the Highgrove Garden Festival this year as well as for private client work. It has been wonderful to share the experiences with the designers.”

Kate has a diploma in professional garden design after studying at the Cotswold Gardening School. She designed and built her first RHS show garden at the Malvern Spring Festival in May 2015, after winning a national RHS competition. Her garden ‘Constraining Nature’ won an RHS Gold medal and was awarded the Best Festival Garden prize.

Kate’s talk entitled ‘Winning with Wyevale’ was all about using Wyevale plants in her RHS Malvern show garden in 2015.

Kate said: “What a wonderful exciting day at Wyevale Nurseries. It’s been thrilling to work with the team here and use Wyevale Nurseries extraordinary range of plants to recreate the key trends from Chelsea 2016 for the invited audiences of garden and landscape designers.

“It is so encouraging to see Wyevale Nurseries fostering their relationship with design professionals and working together to help the industry. Wyevale Nurseries have their fingers on the pulse and know what’s ‘hot’ in the plant world right now, with wonderful new products in the pipeline.”

Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who passed away in 2011.

The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand, and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.

The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.

Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.
