Wilko poaches Argos director

It has been reported that Wilko has poached a director from Argos to replace Robin Lassiter, the value chain’s retiring retail director.

Anthony Houghton is currently retail stores director for Argos and is understood to be joining Wilko next June.  He has previously held positions at Curry’s, Phones4U and Woolworths, and was pivotal in developing the Argos-eBay partnership.

Wilko is readying itself for aggressive expansion into London and the south-east, having taken its first steps into the area by opening a store on Kensington High Street last year.

Retail Week reports that it has seen a property requirement document sent by Wilko to estate agents, which specifies the retailer’s need for stores of 2,500-10,000 sq ft in prime locations. London’s Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road are understood to be of particular interest, as are sites in Brixton, Camden Town, Ealing Broadway, Greenwich, Hackney, Surrey Quays and Victoria.

Further afield, Wilko is also seeking stores of 5,000 sq ft to 15,000 sq ft in areas such as Brighton, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Oxford.
