The Welsh First Minister has announced the roadmap out of lockdown in Wales, confirming that all remaining 'non-essential' retail and close contact services will be able to reopen from Monday 12 April.

The WRC has welcomed the news and the clarity it brings in a press release, which you can read in full below.

WRC: Welcome confirmation of retail re-opening

Commenting on the confirmation that ‘non-essential’ retail will be able to fully re-open from 12 April, Head of the Welsh Retail Consortium, Sara Jones, said:

“We have been eagerly awaiting a confirmed date for re-opening of our ‘non-essential’ shops, some 102 days after they were compelled to close, and this anticipated announcement finally provides that clarity. It is welcome that the Welsh Government has listened to our representations, and we hope that today’s news will provide a much needed cashflow and confidence boost for the retailers concerned and their suppliers.

“Retail businesses have spent hundreds of millions on making their premises Covid-secure. Whilst retailers are working hard to maintain a safe shopping experience, shoppers themselves can play their part by adhering to the rules on face-coverings, social distancing, queuing, and hand-sanitising.

“We know that previous re-openings have shown that demand can be slow to return and so the Welsh Government has a vital role to play in building up consumer confidence across the country to power the spending-led recovery. All hopes will be pinned on consumers wanting to break free from home to browse the stores that have been out of bounds for months, our retailers are certainly ready to rise to the challenge of being an integral motor in the Welsh economic engine once more”.
