UK Footfall Stagnated In Week Prior To Freedom Day
Data from Springboard shows that UK footfall stagnated ahead of the long awaited Freedom Day today, but a glimmer of hope for hospitality as post 5pm footfall rises.
To ensure Springboard's insights are as relevant as possible the company has introduced a year-on-year 2021 vs 2019 comparison for footfall.
Retail Parks - Week 28 2021
2021 vs 2020: +22.0%
2021 vs 2019: -5.3%
Week-on-week: -0.8%
Diane Wehrle, Marketing and Insights Director at Springboard, said:
"In the last week before "Freedom Day" - when all compulsory restrictions are being removed in England - footfall across UK retail destinations stagnated in overall terms, with very little uplift from the week before. Despite this, there was a glimmer of hope for the hospitality industry, as the most gains in footfall were made post 5pm as shoppers took the opportunity provided by the weather to enjoy hospitality venues.
"However, the picture varied across the three destination types, and weather was undoubtedly a key factor in this. As the weather improved from Tuesday onwards, so did footfall, but it was high streets - where shoppers could make the most of the warm sunny weather - that benefited the most, and over the period post 5pm the gains in high street footfall inevitably outshone those in shopping centres and retail parks where the evening hospitality offer is far more limited."
