Tesco plans innovative eco superstore in Nottingham

Tesco, the UK’s biggest retailer, has unveiled the design for its new 90,000 sq ft superstore development in Nottingham Eastside.

Award winning design company Mangera Yvars fought off over 130 competitors to be chosen as the vision for the regeneration of the 35 acre Eastside zone which will also encompass 35,000 sq ft of office space.

The design incorporate four piazzas and a promenade, and also includes sustainable features including photovoltaic cells, green walls and a green roof to create an organic lace pattern.

Ali Mangera, a founding partner of Mangera Yvars Architects, said: “We are delighted and impressed by the tremendous support Tesco has given to us in developing this innovative scheme for Nottingham.

“The scheme represents a bold new step for supermarket design where the public realm is fully integrated into the building concept. “Our proposal is to wrap public activities around the store and create a series of event spaces including a community centre and smaller scale shops and cafe.”

If granted planning permission, the construction will be built on land bordered by Manvers Street and Poplar Street and will help join the city centre with the neighbouring areas of St Anns and Sneinton.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “It has generally been acknowledge that Nottingham would benefit from a large food store.

“Nottingham Eastside has been widely billed as a development that will bring forward high quality residential and commercial design. This competition is our opportunity to contribute to the fresh, iconic design that Nottingham is seeking.”
