New data from Barclays shows that Sunday 26 November saw the highest volume of retail transactions processed so far this year. Despite Black Friday’s reputation as the busiest day in the shopping calendar, Sunday surpassed both Friday and Cyber Monday in terms of retail sales by 13.49 per cent and 26.20 per cent respectively.

Barclays sees nearly half of the nation’s credit and debit card transactions, providing a unique view of UK consumer spending. The volume of retail transactions on Sunday’s super shopping day was 50.38 per cent higher than the 2023 daily average. Three in five retail transactions took place online (59.51 per cent) compared to in-store.

2023’s most popular days for UK shoppers, based on transactions processed by Barclays to date are:

  1. Super Sunday (26th November) – sales up 50.38 per cent vs daily average
  2. Easter Monday (10th April) – sales up 32.71 per cent vs daily average
  3. Black Friday (24th November) – sales up 32.50 per cent vs daily average

Marc Pettican, Head of Barclaycard Payments said: “Sunday emerged as the highlight of this year’s Black Friday shopping weekend – demonstrating the continued popularity of this retail milestone. Our data shows Black Friday is no longer a single-day event, with discounts on offer throughout most of November. After a subdued October, retailers will have benefited from consumers’ continued appetite for deals and will undoubtedly be hopeful that strong sales continue into December.”
