Study Reveals Regional Furniture Expenditure

• A study has found that the North East is where people are spending the highest proportion of their outgoings on furniture and furnishings, carpets and other floor coverings.
  
  
• Using data from the ONS, the study examined how much each region spends on furniture as a proportion of its overall weekly outgoings. 

•  London is the UK region where people spend the smallest percentage of their outgoings on furniture.    

A new study has found that the North East is the UK region where people are spending the highest proportion of their outgoings on furniture. 

Home furnishing experts Englanderline analysed the latest available data to determine which areas in the UK spend the most on furniture. The research revealed how much each region spend on the commodity as a proportion of its overall weekly outgoings.    

How much each region spends on furniture as a proportion of its weekly outgoings (%)  

The average yearly (52 weeks) furniture expenditure in the North East is £1,092. Of that, £884 is spent on furniture and furnishings, whilst a further £187.20 is spent on carpets and other floor coverings. Breaking those figures down, it means that 4.57% of people in the region’s overall weekly outgoings is spent on furniture, which is the highest out of anywhere in the UK.   

With an average of 4.22% of people’s overall weekly outgoings spent on furniture, Yorkshire and The Humber ranked in second. The research showed that the region’s average yearly household expenditure amounts to £1,045. Of that, £852.80 is spent on furniture and furnishings, whilst £197.60 is spent on carpets and other floor coverings.    

With the third highest proportion of weekly outgoings spent on furniture (3.83%), the East of England ranked in third. On average, yearly furniture expenditure amounts to £1,138, a figure that is higher than both the North East and Yorkshire and The Humber.    

Wales ranked in fourth (3.76%). The Welsh’s average yearly furniture expenditure amounts to £962, which is the lowest out of any of the regions in the top five.    

With an average of 3.68% of people’s weekly outgoings spent on furniture, the North West followed next. Spending just £10.40 more than Wales each year, the average total yearly expenditure in the region amounts to £972.40.   

The East Midlands ranked in sixth (3.67%), although the average yearly carpets and floor coverings expenditure is the highest of any region (£260). Meanwhile, the South West, which ranked in seventh (3.62%), is the region with the highest average yearly furniture and furnishings expenditure (£962).    

On the opposite end of the scale, London is the region where people are spending the smallest proportion of their weekly outgoings on furniture (2.67%). England’s capital also has the joint lowest average yearly expenditure on carpets and floor coverings (£145.60).    

Scotland ranked in 13 (3.23%). The Scottish also have the lowest yearly furniture expenditure, with people spending an average of just £816.40 on the commodity each year.  

The South East ranked in 12th for the proportion of people’s weekly outgoings on furniture (3.26%), although the region does have the second highest average yearly expenditure for carpets and floor coverings (£234).    

Although it is the region with the lowest yearly expenditure for carpets and floor coverings (£130), Northern Ireland ranked in eleventh (3.49%). Meanwhile, on average, the people of the United Kingdom on the whole spend 3.5% of their weekly outgoings on furniture.    

England (3.51%) and the West Midlands (3.59%) ranked in ninth and eighth respectively.
