Springboard: Weekly Retail Footfall Remains Level
Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 37, advising that footfall across UK retail destinations remained almost level last week from the week before, but high streets fared best as the weather improved.
To ensure its insights are as relevant as possible, Springboard has introduced a year-on-year 2021 vs 2019 comparison for footfall.
Springboard Index - High Street - Week 37 2021
2021 vs 2020 = +14.9%
2021 vs 2019 = -17.3%
Week-on-week = -4.2%
Springboard Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
"Footfall in UK retail destinations last week remained virtually level last week from the week before, but it was most definitely a week of two halves. Footfall over the first three days, from Sunday to Tuesday, was impacted heavily by rain that was widespread across the UK. However, over the subsequent four days, when the weather improved significantly, footfall strengthened.
"Needless to say of the three destination types it was high streets that suffered the most from the rain; but it was also high streets that bounced back most strongly from Wednesday onwards, with an increase in footfall from the week before that was a third higher than in shopping centres and more than six times higher than in retail parks.
"Footfall in Central London and in regional cities outside of the capital both rose last week, alongside drops in Outer London and market towns. With the majority of office based employees working from home over the pandemic period footfall in both Outer London and market towns has consistently been more resilient than in larger cities, so a reversal of this trend is clear evidence of the start of a shift in behaviour."
