Springboard: Significant Decline In Boxing Day Footfall
Data from Springboard has revealed that footfall declined by 10.6% on Boxing Day when compared with 2018 figures.
The decline was the steepest decline since 2010, attributed to wet weather and pre-Christmas discounting.
High streets suffered a 13.6% decline; shopping centres saw an 8.8% drop and retail parks experienced a 5.9% fall when compared to 2018.
Diane Wehrle, insights director at Springboard, said: “This result reflects a number of underlying structural changes in terms of how consumers shop with more going online, the increased spending around Black Friday, the growing demand for hospitality and experience, and the fact that many consumers are still celebrating Christmas on Boxing Day with their family,” she said.
“In combination, these changes mean that Boxing Day is indisputably a less important trading day than it once was.”
