Springboard: Modest Decline In Retail Footfall Last Week
Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 20 (15/05 - 21/05) noting that UK footfall dropped marginally last week vs the week before.
Springboard High Street Index - Week 20 2022
2022 vs 2021 = +22.3%
2022 vs 2019 = -15.9%
Week-on-week = -0.2%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
For the second week in a row footfall across UK retail destinations fell back a little last week versus the week before, but unlike the week before last footfall strengthened in shopping centres whilst dropping marginally in both high streets and retail parks.
Footfall shifted from day to day over the seven day period, with changes in the weather influencing consumer activity. There was a particularly large dip on Sunday, when rain deterred shoppers, especially in high streets, whilst on Wednesday - when the weather was warm and sunny - footfall rose significantly.
Larger cities across the UK performed better than local high streets last week as employees continued to drift back to offices, with rises in Central London and in city centres around the UK. In contrast, footfall in both market towns and in Outer London - where rises in activity are synonymous with home working - was lower than last week than in the week before.
Two consecutive weeks of modest declines in footfall has led to the gap from the 2019 footfall level widening once again.
