Springboard: Jubilee Weekend Has Positive Result For Retail
Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 22 (29/05 - 04/06) noting that UK footfall dropped marginally last week vs the week before.
Springboard Shopping Centre Index - Week 22 2022
2022 vs 2021 = +18.6%
2022 vs 2019 = -9.5%
Week-on-week = +8.6%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
Footfall rose noticeably last week from the week before, with the combined effect of the half term holiday and the Platinum Jubilee weekend delivering a hugely positive result for retail destinations.
However, there was a clear delineation in performance between the period up to Thursday from Friday onwards. In the lead up to the bank holiday and on Thursday footfall rose each day by significant amounts from the week before, but from Friday through to the end of the week footfall was lower than the previous week on each day as shoppers focused on celebrating the Jubilee rather than visiting stores and destinations.
Footfall rose in all three key destination types last week, but the uplift in activity in high streets and shopping centres was more than double that in retail parks. All types of town centre benefited but, given the good weather and the fact that it was a school half term holiday, coastal towns had exceptional performance, with footfall increasing by more than double that in any other type of town. This was reflected in a rise in footfall in the South West region that was double that in UK high streets.
As a consequence of the huge increase in footfall last week from the week before, the gap from the 2019 footfall level narrowed to the smallest yet since the start of the pandemic.
