Springboard: Good Weather Boosts High Street Footfall
Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 27 (03/07 - 09/07) advising that good weather drove shoppers to high streets.
Springboard Retail park Index - Week 27 2022
2022 vs 2021 = -0.1%
2022 vs 2019 = -3.8%
Week-on-week = -0.9%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
"Footfall across UK retail destinations last week was virtually on par with the week before, however, this was wholly driven by a rise in footfall in high streets as shoppers gravitated to external destinations to make the most of the warm sunny weather that bathed most of the UK last week.
"The other key characteristic of last week was that footfall rose consistently from the week before every day up to and including Friday but, as the weather became hotter over the weekend, activity declined across all three destination types as consumers appeared to opt for leisure rather than shopping trips. The impact of the weather was reflected in the results for coastal and historic towns which – as towns that are appealing for day trips – were the only types of town where footfall rose over the weekend.
"It was clear that office employees opted to work from home on Friday, with footfall rising each day between Monday and Thursday in Central London, in other regional cities around the UK and Springboard’s “Back to the Office Benchmark”, but then noticeably dropping on Friday."
