Springboard has published footfall data for week 3 (15/01 - 21/01) noting a rise in footfall across all UK retail destinations, driven by high streets and shopping centres

Springboard Index - Week 3 2023

2023 vs 2022 = +11.2%

2022 vs 2019 = -12.1%

Week-on-week = +3.3%

Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:

Footfall across all UK retail destinations rose last week from the week before, driven by uplifts in activity in high streets and shopping centres, whilst activity in retail parks dipped.

Last week clearly signalled the return of consumers to retail destinations following the end of the Christmas holiday period.  However, the data indicates that much of the uplift will have been driven by employees returning to their offices.

Footfall was higher than in the previous week in all types of high street, but the largest rises occurred in Central London and other city centres across the UK, whilst there were much smaller rises in Outer London and market towns which is synonymous with employees returning to their offices.  This is further demonstrated by a rise in Springboard's Central London "Back to the Office" benchmark that was a fifth higher than the rise in footfall in Central London and in cities outside of the capital.

All UK geographies benefited from an increase in footfall last week.  Five areas recorded uplifts that exceeded the average for the UK as a whole, and in Scotland the rise was more than double the UK average.
