Springboard: Extreme Heat Impacts Footfall In UK Retail Destinations
Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 31 (07/08 - 13/08) advising that the extreme heat impacted retail footfall across the UK.
Springboard Index - Week 32 2022
2022 vs 2021 = +7.6%
2022 vs 2019 = -13.1%
Week-on-week = -3.7%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
The extreme heat severely impacted footfall across UK retail destinations last week, with all three key destination types recording declines in footfall from the week before. The hardest hit were high streets and shopping centres, where the drop in footfall was of a similar magnitude.
The week was most definitely one of two halves, with footfall virtually on par with the week before up to Tuesday, but as the weather got hotter so the drop in footfall increased, accelerating each day to the end of the week. Inevitably the greatest impact was felt in the afternoon period when the heat peaked.
The drop in footfall last week spanned all UK geographies apart from Scotland, and all town types apart from coastal towns which continued to benefit from the school summer break.
