Six million Brits expected to ‘Do It Themselves’ this bank holiday

6 million homeowners are expected to revamp their homes this bank holiday weekend, Asda have revealed.

Asda, the successful supermarket chain, believe that today will be the biggest day of 2013 to get stuck into DIY, with 6 million Home owners set to get creative to finish off uncompleted jobs in and around the Home. Not only will homeowners finally be ticking off the ‘To-Do’ list, but since the start of ‘The Chelsea Flower Show,’ people have been inspired to get green-fingered with sales of hanging baskets set to flourish by 700%.

According to the survey, 39% of the nation will stay home today to focus on those ‘quick fixes’ and get their homes set for the summer months, leaving the rest of the long weekend free to relax. They predict that sales of general hardware will increase by 63% with customers eagerly buying up to 10,000 hand tools in an attempt to hammer down and finish off the nitty-gritty jobs.

Brits won’t be accused of having a screw loose, as Asda’s predicted sale stats show 2,000 screw drivers, 1,500 tool kits and 1,000 tool boxes are set to fly off the shelves this weekend. The top five popular DIY jobs for today will be painting with 42%, 36% of us will be repairing shelves and faulty furniture, 33% of us will be getting green-fingered and taking to the roots of the garden, building new furniture with just 33% and plumbing will be done by 29% of people.

The most popular DIY job that we love to do is painting, with a colourful 42% of DIYers looking to give their homes a new lease of life. The study reveals that the main reason for painting is to keep up with the latest colour trends with teal storming the charts as the bestselling colour among Asda’s 300 strong online paint range.

The Chelsea Flower Show has motivated us all to get our gardens looking picture perfect for the summer months. Despite the weather conditions not looking pretty for the weekend, outdoor DIY and gardening is fixing up to be at an all-time high for this year. Asda is expecting its biggest sales ever today, as a blooming third of Brits get to grips with the DIY in the garden. To meet the demands of this garden inspired craze, some Asda stores are transforming trolley bays into mini garden centres, shipping in thousands of extra plants nationwide as it’s expecting a 45% increase in bedding plant sales.

Michael Figg, DIY Expert at Asda says: “Bank holiday weekends are always a popular time for DIY but with the bad weather driving Brits up the wall, this weekend is particularly perfect for getting stuck into home improvements. And fixing up the home doesn’t have to cost a fortune, with great offers in our May DIY sale, there’s no excuse not to spruce up your house and garden ready for summer….when it actually arrives.”
