ScS Stops Selling Carpets And Flooring

SCS Cardiff Capital Retail Park

Retail Week has reported that ScS has phased out the sale of carpets and flooring since its acquisition by Poltronesofà, in December last year.

The moves takes ScS back to its roots in Sunderland in 1894, when it was a family-owned general home furnishings store operating under the name "Suite Centre Sunderland". By the 1980s, the business operated from eight stores in the North East of England under the ScS name, specialising in selling upholstered furniture. A store expansion programme has seen the store estate grow to over 100 showrooms. In 2012, following the addition of flooring products to its offering, the company was re-branded ‘Sofa Carpet Specialist’.

In January 2024, ScS Group Plc was acquired by Cerezzola Limited, a newly incorporated wholly-owned subsidiary of Poltronesofà S.p.A., a leading Italian brand of hand-made, fabric sofas and armchairs.

Industry research showed that ScS was the most prominent flooring brand of 2023, but Retail Week reports that the business failed to make any market share gains in the carpet and flooring category, despite investment.  The carpet and flooring division previously accounted for c. 8% of the retailer's sales.

SCS has confirmed that existing orders and warranties will be fulfilled.

The news follows Carpetright's decision to file a notice of intention to appoint administrators last Friday, which created speculation around a potential pre-pack administration deal. The Times reported that administrators were discussing a possible acquisition by The Floor Room, a flooring retailer which trades from within John Lewis stores and is owned by Nestware Holdings, Carpetright's parent company.  Kingfisher, Alteri, ilco and Gordon Brothers are also understood to have been approached.
