Sainsbury's opens flagship supermarket with first Habitat concession
As Sainsbury’s opens its new flagship supermarket in Nine Elms, Vauxhall, South West London, Mike Coupe discusses how Sainsbury’s wants to give customers everything they need under one roof.
“We’re delighted to open our new store in Nine Elms and show our customers our vision for the supermarket of the future. There is certainly a trend toward shopping in convenience stores and online, but supermarkets still take more than £1 for every £2 spent on groceries in the UK and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
That makes it an exciting time for retail. Customers want convenience, flexibility, speed and choice to shop whenever and wherever they want. Whether it’s home delivery, Click & Collect, or a visit to one of our stores, Nine Elms demonstrates perfectly how our customers will benefit from great quality products, services and fast delivery.
For example, the layout at Nine Elms has been carefully designed to make it easy and convenient for customers to navigate, which includes putting our new On the Go sandwich, sushi and snack range close to the self-checkouts and exit for those who want to be in and out as quickly as possible. Food to go is an increasingly important to our customers so we’ve invested £8m in the quality and variety of our range.
Food is at the heart of our offer and in Nine Elms we’ve opened our first-ever Sainsbury’s Foodhall with newly designed fish, fresh meat and deli counters. The spacious Foodhall includes a large, more open produce section and a state-of-the-art bakery and patisserie.
Since acquiring Argos and Habitat, Sainsbury’s has become one of the largest clothing and general merchandise retailers in the country and Nine Elms has dedicated one third of space to clothing and general merchandise. This includes Tu clothing and our new Tu Premium range, plus homeware, cookware and kitchenware.
Customers can also buy or order from Argos’s extensive range at home and then collect their Argos purchases - and even their eBay orders - in the store. Nine Elms is also the first Sainsbury’s store to have a Mini Habitat concession and four more will be opening in Sainsbury’s stores over the next few months. All of this supports our strategy to offer our customers a wide range of quality products at fair prices, whenever and wherever they want to buy them.
There are also carefully chosen concession partners, offering complementary products and services which are key to making Nine Elms store a destination shop for customers. As well as a Sainsbury’s Café, Nine Elms is also home to the first Sushi Gourmet concession in the UK, a Starbucks, Lloyds Pharmacy and an Explore Learning Centre.
With all of this under one roof - including 90,000 products - Nine Elms is a one-stop-shop for everyone.”
