Retailers sign-up to Facebook new discount service

A new discounting system from social media giant Facebook has been adopted by several UK retailers. Facebook Deals, which launched in the UK today, offers special promotions to Facebook users who ‘check-in’ at participating stores.

Retailers Argos, Debenhams, O2 and Benetton along with other companies Yo Sushi, Mazda, Alton Towers and Starbucks are the early adopters of the service.

Joanna Shields, Vice-President of EMEA for Facebook, said: “We all love a bargain so whether you’re on the lookout for a special offer at your favourite restaurant or tips from a fashionista friend about a discount on shoes in a department store, Facebook Deals will help you find it.

“Facebook is built around people and sharing personal experiences and Deals is a great extension of this.

“By bringing valuable and relevant offers to you wherever and whenever you want them, Deals delivers a powerful experience that combines technology and location in a way that a pure online or offline experience could never deliver.”

Deals is part of an increasing co-operation between Facebook and retailers with the latter keen to exploit the consumer information held and created by the former.

A typical deal offered under the new service will see customers checking in at Debenhams on February 14th being able to claim a free Benefit mascara and makeover kit.

Both Argos and Benetton have pledged money to charity if its customers check-in using the new Deals system.

Jim Clear, Argos Digital Brand Development Manager, commented: “Argos is committed to social media and our adoption of Facebook Deals is a way to engage customers and receive timely insight and feedback.

“The size and reach of Argos made us a natural launch participator for Facebook Deals in the UK.”
