Pool Homebase to close

Homebase team member

A BLUNDERING homeware company admitted it was unsure if it was shutting a Cornwall store – despite advertising a closing-down sale.

Dozens of people are now facing redundancy at the Homebase shop on the Pool Industrial Estate.

Posters near the entrance to the store, next to Tesco Extra and Pool Market, offer shoppers large discounts because "Everything must go".

However, a spokesman told the West Briton on Tuesday: "Homebase can confirm that there is no current plan to close the Homebase store on the Pool Industrial Estate, Cornwall."

After the mistake was pointed out, the company blamed "mixed wires" and confirmed it would in fact close the store on March 28. "Discussions are being held with colleagues to find alternative employment both within and outside of Home Retail Group," said a spokesman, who declined to reveal how many people worked in the store.

At the site a manager who did not want to be named told the West Briton she was not allowed to comment.

She added: "It is more than our jobs are worth."

Homebase has sold off several stores, including branches in St Austell and Liskeard.

Rumours have now started as to which company will take over the site, with many suggesting South West firm The Range or discount homeware store B&M.

A spokesman for South West homewares retailer The Range declined to comment on any plans to take on the Pool property, while discount chain B&M said: "We are actively seeking opportunities to increase the number of B&M stores in Cornwall."

Charles Bickford, chairman of Carn Brea Parish Council, said: "I'm saddened to see it go. The staff are lovely and very helpful. It's also a shame for the economy of Pool, as it reduces the choice for shoppers.

"I guess they just lost their way. I know I've been in there one evening and been the only customer."
