Plans for joint B&Q-Morrisons store in Sunderland "well received"

HUNDREDS of new jobs could be in store as part of a DIY business is turned into a supermarket.

B&Q and Morrisons have submitted plans to turn part of the homeware business in Trimdon Street, Deptford, into a food shop after announcing the proposal at the start of this year.

The firms say the idea was “well received” by residents during a consultation project.

The application to Sunderland City Council sets out how part of the property will be converted into a “fresh format” Morrisons with a contemporary style, leaving the remainder as a smaller B&Q.
If approved, the Morrisons shop will offer its full range of goods and services, with up to 300 jobs to be created.

Richard Haynes, Morrisons’ development executive, said: “The submission of this application marks the next key milestone for this project.

“Our latest internal store layout, including innovations in fresh produce retail, will be featured in the new store alongside our very popular Market Street.”

Scott Sharp, B&Q’s divisional director north, added: “We are delighted to be working with Morrisons to revitalise an established shopping location and renew our commitment to Sunderland. B&Q will still be the place to come for all your home improvement needs. Our new store format will be easier for customers to shop and will inspire and help them to undertake their home improvement projects.”
