Peverell Homebase to close

ANOTHER Homebase store near Plymouth is to close down, it has been announced, just days after the news that a city-based superstore would shut.

The Herald reported last week how one of Plymouth's two Homebase stores was shutting next month.

The homeware retailer's base in Montpelier Road, Peverell, is to close in September.

Homebase initially said the lease would be taken over by The Range, the discount retail rival owned by Plymouth billionaire Chris Dawson.

However, a spokesman for the company later backed away from the comments.

Now Homebase has announced the closure of a store in Cornwall.

Workers at the St Austell branch face an uncertain future after the company announced it plans to close the store.

Homebase says it has entered into a consultation period with staff at the store on Southborne Road, but refused to say any more due to what it described as "commercial sensitivities".

A company spokesman said: "Homebase can confirm that the business has entered a period of consultation with colleagues concerning the proposed closure of our store in St Austell.

"Colleagues at the store have been informed and we will be working with them over the next few weeks to support them as much as possible.

"Due to commercial sensitivities, we are unable to comment further at this time."

Parent company Home Retail Group owns around 300 Homebase outlets.

In 2012 it announced plans to close 40 over five years when their leases ran out.
