Kingfisher scores highly in Newsweek’s 2011 Green Rankings

Kingfisher plc has been ranked 116th in Newsweek's 2011 Green Rankings of the 500 largest publicly traded companies by revenue, market capitalization, and number of employees.
The ranking is based on an overall 'Green Score', derived from three component scores for environmental impact (based on over 700 metrics, including greenhouse-gas emissions, water use, solid-waste disposal, and acid-rain emissions.), environmental management and disclosure.

Kingfisher describes its activities below:

- Kingfisher is the 12th highest ranked UK company overall and the 6th highest ranked retailer overall
- We are top of the retailers (overall) for disclosure, 6th for environmental impact and 29th for environmental management
- Among UK retailers, we are ranked second only to M&S (33*) and ahead of Sainsbury's (174*), Tesco (180*) and Morrisons (192*)

Kingfisher's Future Homes strategy has prioritised four sustainability areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact - Timber, Energy, Innovation, Communities. The aim is to help people create sustainable, affordable homes with good value products that are better for the home and better for the planet.

Sustainability priorities:-

Timber: To sell timber only from proven well-managed forests or recycled sources.
Achievement: 81% of reported timber volume sold is from proven well-managed forests or recycled sources in 2010/11.

Energy: To be the best at providing energy-saving solutions for our customers and ourselves.
Achievement: B&Q UK has trained 1,250 staff to be in-store Eco Advisers and has launched 'energy-saving centres' within stores.

Innovation: To be famous as the place to shop for sustainable products.
Achievement: 16,500 independently verified eco products - accounting for 10.5% of total retail sales in 2010/11

Communities: To have a positive impact on all the communities we operate in.
Achievement: £1,598,000 invested in charity / community projects in 2010/11.

Newsweek's Green Rankings compare the actual environmental footprints, management (policies, programs, initiatives, controversies), and reporting practices of big companies. The data is compiled in conjunction with two environmental research firms, Trucost and Sustainalytics. The Green Rankings have been running since 2009.
