ONE of high street's biggest retailers has this week confirmed its move to Tamworth – more than a month after the Herald uncovered and exclusively revealed the plans.
John Lewis will open a £7million "at home" store at Ventura Park later this year, creating around 200 jobs, the retail giant confirmed this week.
Construction is due to start on site next week and the store will open in autumn 2011.
"The opening of John Lewis at home Tamworth shows our determination to become more convenient for shoppers in the West Midlands," explained Andy Street, managing director for John Lewis.
"The Tamworth shop will complement our existing full line department store in Solihull and our flagship shop due to open in Birmingham in 2014.
"Together these shops will transform our presence in the West Midlands."
The at home store will focus on furniture, furnishing accessories, electrical goods and home technology. The 42,000 square foot single-storey shop will be built on lands next to the Tamworth Herald offices in Ventura Park Road.
Tim Harrison, head of format development, said: "The "at home" format has been very well received by customers for its convenience and ease.
"Tamworth is an ideal fit for us in terms of location and catchment and we look forward to providing shoppers with our differentiated service, inspiring products and great value."
The John Lewis store is one of two developments under construction at the retail park.
Dramatically different in design to all other units at the retail park, John Lewis at home will be similar in size to Marks and Spencer , ASDA and Sainsbury's.
The second development will bring DIY giant B&Q to Ventura Park.
The £6million Cardinal Point Scheme includes a 45,000 square foot unit, which will be home to B&Q, and three smaller retail units at 35,000 square feet combined. Joining B&Q will be fashion retailer Next and electronics store Maplins, who plan to take premises at the scheme, which will eventually boast almost 100,000 square foot of retail space.
