JD.com commits to selling £2bn of British goods in China
The Chinese online giant JD.com has today committed to support British businesses by selling £2 billion of UK goods to its Chinese consumers.
The online company, with an annual turnover of 260.2bn CNY (2016) serves one billion people across China and over the next two to three years will work with the Department of International Trade (DIT) to make it easier for UK companies to sell on its website.
This announcement, made during Prime Minister Theresa May’s first bilateral trip to the country, follows a significant increase in the sales of UK products in the last few years.The number of British products offered has doubled in the last two years and sales increased 100% during 2017.
DIT China director Richard Burn said “Many British brands recognise the huge potential of China’s enormous e-commerce market. JD truly understands what Chinese consumers want and has the resources to help British brands ensure success in the region. We’re looking forward to working with JD to bring more British brands to China in the future".
JD.com international president Winston Cheng added: “We’re pleased to be working with DIT to make it easier and more convenient for British brands to enter the Chinese market. We’ve seen rapid growth in demand for British products from our consumers in recent years, and will look to showcase the ‘Best of Britain’ on our platform even more through this agreement.”
