Increased Demand for Female Painters and Decorators Could Spark Change

Female Decorator

The trade industries have stereotypically been considered a male space. However, industry experts at The Paint Shed, have noticed that a significant change could be on course.

The Paint Shed’s analysis found that demand for female painters and decorators is surging with google searches for “Female Decorators Near Me” surging by 85%. When broken down regionally, there were key hot spots of interest. Sheffield and Plymouth, in particular, saw searches surge 400%.

Search Increase for Regional Painters and Decorators:

  • “Female Painter And Decorator Sheffield”: 400%

  • “Female Painter And Decorator Plymouth”: 400%

  • “Female Painter And Decorator Bristol”: 300%

  • “Female Painter And Decorator Liverpool”: 100%

  • “Female Decorators Gloucester”: 100%

  • “Female Decorators Exeter”: 100%

Michael Rolland, Managing Director at The Paint Shed has commented on the rising interest of women in trade:

Is the number of women in trade increasing?

"It is encouraging to see a gradual increase in women entering trades, hopefully contributing to a more diverse and inclusive industry. While women currently represent approximately 4% of the painting and decorating sector, we are optimistic that growth and interest is a trend which will persist, contributing to a breakdown in traditional gender barriers and enriching the trades with a broader range of talent and perspectives."

Why are more women looking to join painting and decorating industries?

“We’ve seen that demand for tradeswomen is increasing. For example, Google searches for female painters and decorators have surged, which may have spurred women to enter a previously male-dominated industry. Our analysis of search trends shows that female painters and decorators are specifically in demand in Sheffield, Plymouth, Bristol and Liverpool, which is exciting to see and suggests that previous prejudices could be waning.”

Why is sexism a problem in trade work?

"Despite strides toward gender equality in trade industries, women continue to face substantial challenges, including sexism and gender bias. There is a stereotype that trade work is a male industry, which can lead to women being unfairly expected to repeatedly prove their competence to gain the same level of respect that is automatically afforded to their male colleagues. Sexism also appears in terms of on-site harassment. Whilst there is growing awareness and changes are being implemented for the likes of catcalling and other discrimination, a more concerted effort is required from industry leaders. Anti-discrimination policies must be robust, and trade businesses must foster inclusive workplace cultures.

We hope that companies begin investing in women–promoting mentorship programs that support women's growth and development in the trades.”
