It has been reported that IKEA could open a store near Preston in Lancashire.

A new leisure and retail site is planned for an area known as the Cuerden Strategic Site in Bamber Bridge, near Preston, which is located at the start of the M65 and a few minutes from the M6 and the M61.

Lancashire County Council is to hold a public consultation next week (see www.thisiscuerden.co.uk for more details), after which the plans for the development will be submitted.

Plans for the site include an IKEA store; five large retail units; restaurants; car showrooms; a 120-room hotel; 210 new homes; 80,000mof industrial space, and 26,000m2 of office space.

If the site is approved, around 4,500 jobs will be created.

Jennifer Mein, Leader of Lancashire County Council, said: “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a development that will bring economic and employment benefits for the whole of the county.

“This development is a key part of the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal and shows just how it will bring jobs and prosperity to the area.

“I’d urge local people to have their say on this ambitious project through the public consultation.”

Tim Farlam, real estate manager for Ikea said: “At IKEA our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people. We want to make IKEA accessible to many more people and are very excited to be opening a number of new stores around the UK.
