IKEA Plans Global Roll-Out of Rental Service Trial
Jesper Brodin, chief executive of IKEA’s parent company Ingka Group, has revealed that the company's planned furniture rental service is to be rolled out globally as it seeks to become more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
In February IKEA revealed that it was going to conduct a furniture rental trial in The Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland and said it was considering developing an online furniture marketplace.
At an event in an IKEA store in Kaarst, Germany, Brodin confirmed that the company will be testing a number of leasing offers in all 30 of its markets by 2020.
He said that the trial was also motivated by the fact that consumers cannot always afford to buy new furniture after moving house and added that, in a survey, 90% of IKEA customers had revealed that they were prepared to change their shopping habits to benefit the environment.
IKEA launched a global transformation plan in November, stating it intends to simplify the business and increase investments in ecommerce, stores and fulfilment centres.
