IKEA Offers 1,000+ EV Chargers In Norway And Sweden
With the commitment of reducing relative GHG emissions from customers and co-workers´ travel, and home deliveries in 50% by 2030, Ingka Group is expanding its Electric Vehicles (EV) chargers’ network with more than one thousand new charging points, until the end of 2024.
Last year, Ingka Group reached its goal of providing EV charging stations in all stores worldwide where parking was provided. The new EV chargers result from a partnership with the operator Recharge and represent a significant increase in the existing network, with more than 300 being fast chargers, able to fully charge an electrical vehicle in 15-45 minutes. They will be available to customers, co-workers and to charge the IKEA home delivery trucks.
“We are on a journey to make it more convenient and accessible for the many people to travel with zero-emissions and we have the ambition by 2030 to reduce relative emissions from customers and co-worker travel and home deliveries by 50 %. In 2021 we reached our goal to provide access to EV charging stations in all stores where parking is provided, ensuring a convenient experience for customers who have made the switch to electric vehicles. This new increase in charging infrastructure will support further our customers, as part of our customer experience journey”, says Karol Gobczyński, Climate and Energy Leader, Ingka Group.
Ingka Group countries provide the land while the charging operator Recharge owns the charging stations and is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the new EV chargers.
IKEA Norway will receive more than 300 new EV chargers and IKEA Sweden is enlarging its network with 700 new EV chargers, allowing customers to travel from Malmö in the south to Haparanda in the north, with an electric vehicle, by charging only at IKEA. All these new EV chargers will be installed until the end of 2024.
“Scandinavian countries are among those with largest increase in EV use, so we are delighted IKEA retail colleagues in Norway and Sweden are making these significant steps to increase accessibility and convenience to charge their electric cars. Shaping a new normal that´s better for all of us and our planet”, concludes Karol Gobczyński.
IKEA is committed to the Paris Agreement and to contribute to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This includes a commitment to become net-zero latest 2050 and halving the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in absolute terms from the total IKEA value chain by 2030. Beyond reducing our own climate footprint in line with the 1.5°C target, IKEA will contribute to further reducing greenhouse gas emissions in society by going beyond IKEA. This will enable IKEA to reduce more GHG emissions than the IKEA value chain emits by 2030.
As part of that commitment Ingka Group is more determined than ever to be part of solving the climate crisis and showing that healthy and sustainable living can be affordable, attractive and accessible for the many people.
In addition to a range of actions across the business to reduce emissions, as well as investments into renewable energy, Ingka Group has an opportunity to inspire and enable the billions of people it reaches to take climate action in their own lives and is testing several services and solutions for a more sustainable life at home, including buy back and take back services, in-store circular hubs, online platforms for second-hand products, and introducing a more plant-based food offer and even going beyond the IKEA value chain.
