IKEA joins partnership to offer collective electricity switching
- IKEA’s partnership with the Big Clean Switch can help customers live more sustainably and save money by switching to a 100% renewable electricity tariff
- The partnership will use a ‘collective switch model’ to help secure a great deal on renewable electricity, which could save a typical UK household over £300 a year*
- Globally IKEA is working towards 100% renewable energy, pledging to produce as much as the company consumes across its entire operations by 2020
IKEA UK has partnered with the Big Clean Switch to use a collective switch model to secure an exclusive tariff on 100% renewable electricity for its customers**. The deal is expected to save a typical UK household over £300 a year.* The announcement is timely following news from Ofgem last week that it is piloting collective switching as a mechanism for getting a better deal on energy for disengaged energy customers.***
This partnership demonstrates the retailer’s commitment to enabling customers and co-workers to live more sustainably by switching to a renewable electricity provider.
The Big Clean Switch is a ‘profit with purpose’ company which helps people to switch to renewable electricity providers by making the process simple and easy. The company only list tariffs where the supplier can guarantee that 100% of the electricity sold is matched by electricity from renewables such as sun, wind and water.
Hege Sæbjørnsen, Sustainability Manager at IKEA UK, said, “At IKEA, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond minimising the impact of our own operations to having a positive impact on the world around us. We want to provide our customers with innovative solutions that will help them live a more sustainable life at home and save money in the short and long-term. By partnering with the Big Clean Switch, we hope to make switching to renewable electricity simple, accessible and affordable to everyone.”
Jon Fletcher, Campaign Director at Big Clean Switch, commented, “‘Our aim at the Big Clean Switch is to be a voice for change. We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to switch to renewable electricity and our partnership with IKEA is a big step forward in helping more people achieve this. Every person who makes the switch plays a vital role in taking the necessary action to help reduce the impact of climate change.”
Last year, IKEA UK introduced home solar panels and battery storage (SOLSTRÅLE) into their product range in a bid to make solar more accessible and support home owners towards becoming energy independent.
Hege continued, “As a business, we are working towards 100% renewable energy by pledging to produce as much as we consume in our operations by 2020. Last year in the UK, we generated renewable energy equivalent to 41% of the energy we used. We have also installed solar panels on all new stores and the majority of our existing stores as part of our investment in renewables.”
For every switch, IKEA will receive a commission payment which will support local community initiatives. At the end of the campaign the commission will be split amongst IKEA UK stores. The amount each store receives will be dependent on which ones generate the most switches and the money is to be used specifically for local community initiatives within each store’s area.
