  • Hubexo UKI (comprising NBS, Glenigan and CIS Ireland) has achieved full Greenhouse Gas Inventory carbon neutrality across its operations, including all indirect emissions (Scope 3)
  • Companies awarded certification by UKAS accredited third party assessor, ‘Centre for Assessment’
  • Bio-diversity also given a boost in local regions via native woodland regeneration

Hubexo UKI, a provider of cutting-edge data, insights, and software solutions to the global construction industry, (NBSGlenigan and CIS Ireland) has been independently certified carbon neutral for its 2023 emissions, with the pledge to retain status throughout 2024 and beyond.

The accomplishment underlines Hubexo’s vision to be a decarbonisation leader and its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its value chain, through providing technologies that aid the wider construction sector in shifting towards more sustainable outcomes.

In 2023, Hubexo introduced new carbon accounting methods, enabling the full calculation of emissions from the company across a full greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory aligned to the greenhouse gas protocol.

The work formed part of the company’s alignment with new regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

The focus on emissions includes direct GHG emissions from owned or controlled sources such as the company fleet (Scope 1), indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity (Scope 2), and the upstream and downstream supply chain emissions of the business, which includes everything from purchased goods and services to the use of the Hubexo UKI products by its customers (Scope 3).

In addition to focusing on carbon reduction and neutrality, Hubexo UKI has supported bio-diversity regeneration since 2019, with an initiative that has seen circa 10,000 native species trees planted in areas local to its offices.

In 2024, and in recognition of the company’s impact from 2023, Hubexo UKI planted over 1,000 trees in Tyne Valley, near the Newcastle offices, which were planted in partnership with Carma. This B-Corp organisation supports the rehabilitation of PTSD-suffering veterans and provides a route back to work for ex-armed forces personnel through nature-based therapy.

Joanne Keit, Hubexo UKI President, commented: “The construction industry is a huge net contributor to global emissions, and achieving carbon neutrality across our UKI operations demonstrates our commitment to environmental responsibility and our ambition to drive meaningful change across the sector.

“This milestone sets Hubexo UK & Ireland as a decarbonisation leader within the group, showcasing our dedication to continuous improvement and educating the industry on the importance of carbon reduction wherever possible. Importantly, it assures our customers that whenever they use an NBS, Glenigan, or CIS platform, they are making a choice with a neutral carbon impact.”

Lee Jones, Head of Sustainability at Hubexo, added: “This year marks the first time we’ve been certified with a full scope 3 inventory, meaning that everything we do operationally is now carbon neutral.

“Our internal carbon reduction strategy has been a key driver of change - switching energy supply to 100% renewable tariffs, implementing a digital-first approach to meetings, and shifting platforms to the cloud. Aligning with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, we’ve demonstrated how operational changes can deliver meaningful results.”

NBS, part of Hubexo UK & Ireland, and a leading specification and product information platform for the construction industry, has measured emissions relating to its business operations since 2019 and has been certified as carbon neutral since 2021. Since its baseline year metrics of 2019, it has reduced comparable absolute emissions by 56% and emissions intensity per turnover by 70%.

The other Hubexo UKI brands, Glenigan and CIS Ireland, both leading experts in construction intelligence, have reduced emissions intensity per turnover by 12%.

NBS, Glenigan, and CIS Ireland are committed to further carbon reduction in the future, in line with Hubexo’s action-based journey toward Net Zero. To find out more about Hubexo UKI’s sustainability efforts, click here.
