Howdens Adds Two Electric Vehicles To Its Fleet

The UK’s number one trade kitchen manufacturer, Howdens, has announced the addition of two new electric vehicles to its fleet. The two electric vehicles will help to further reduce Howden’s CO2 emissions, as part of the latest step in its ‘Road to Zero’ roadmap, a commitment to achieving zero waste and emissions across all areas of the business.

The two 19-tonne trucks are both Renault E-Tech D-Wide, and have been procured through Yusen Logistics.

The purchase of these electric vehicles comes after Howdens' recent announcement of the reduction of CO2 across its fleet, which was achieved thanks to an increase in driver capability and efficiency. In 2022, Howdens also introduced Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a stable, renewable, sustainable, and high-quality fuel that has quickly become an industry standard.

Efficient driving, combined with the introduction of HVO fuel, have cut Howdens' CO2 emissions by 6% over the last year across its delivery fleet. This number is expected to rise even further with the electric vehicles. The two electric 19T trucks accelerate Howdens' electrification roadmap, staying ahead of the 2035 government ban on fossil-fuelled medium-duty trucks.

Gareth Sterland, Head of Transport, Howdens, said: “We’ve made some very encouraging progress towards increasing the sustainability of our fleet over the past year, and the introduction of our new electric vehicles is a very key step in reducing our carbon footprint even further. We conducted a trial of the effectiveness of electric vehicles, and had some brilliant results, so we’re delighted to be bringing the vehicles in on a permanent basis.

we are committed to implementing new sustainable practises, and improving our existing practises wherever possible. Everyone in the team is excited and committed to contributing to our Road to Zero roadmap.”

Sustainability is central to Howdens growing business, to ensure it continues to be worthwhile for its staff, customers, suppliers, and the environment.
