How To Avoid Scalping Your Garden This First Cut Sunday

As Brits dust off their lawnmowers for the first cut of the year, garden experts have revealed the biggest mistake people make that attracts disease and weeds.
It may be tempting to cut your grass extra short and get your garden looking tidy, but an expert at Flymo has revealed this can do more harm than good.
Sunday, March 23 has been announced as First Cut Sunday - the perfect day to cut your grass for the first time this year.
Julie Blades, Global Product Manager at Flymo, has urged gardeners to use the one-third rule when mowing their lawns for the first time this year.
Only cutting up to a third of the grass blade in a single mow and gradually trimming length over several weeks, will reduce your chance of weed infestation and a wilted lawn.
Julie said: “When tackling First Cut Sunday, the temptation to be ruthless with your lawn must be resisted.
“A blade of grass is split into three sections, and the top section - called the leaf - is where chlorophyll is made and stored.
“If you scalp your grass, less of this precious energy can be produced - meaning you’ll be starving your lawn and leaving it defenceless against diseases and competing weeds.
“Sticking to the one-third rule can tame your unruly grass without harming it.
“Most mowers have adjustable blade heights that can be used to gently ease your lawn into summer.”
First Cut Sunday is eagerly awaited by homes up and down the country, marking the beginning of the season of garden parties and barbecues.
