Hornbach opens new Romanian store in Sibiu

Hornbach Sibiu

DIY retailer Hornbach has opened a sixth store in Sibiu following a EUR 12 million investment, the company announced. In close proximity to the Sibiu North highway, the new unit replaces an OBI store which was bought last year and spreads over 12,000 sqm.

The land on which the store is placed covers a total of 33,200 sqm, including a 7,600 sqm area dedicated to the area of building and construction materials, a 2,700 sqm area for garden and animal products and a 1,700 sqm zone for material pickup.

The new unit boasts 30,000 products, employs 100 and offers specialized services such as assembly, cutting wood, special orders, free trailer shipping, manufacture, financing or mixing paints.

Sibiu is the third location where the retailer has decided to expand outside of Bucharest, beside Brasov and Timisoara. This consolidates the company’s position on the Transylvanian market, along with the Romanian one.

“We consider ourselves to be a Romanian company here. In all countries where we are active we pay taxes, we hire mostly local employees and buy from local providers, goods we distribute to the other countreis where we have stores,” Wolfger Ketzler, member of the Hornbach administration board said.

Hornbach is a multinational family business, which recorded during the financial year 2014/2015 a net turnover of more than EUR 3.5 billion, up 6 percent compared to the previous period. With the opening of the store in Sibiu the group has 152 stores in nine European countries (Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden and Romania), of which 6 in Romania (Bucharest Berceni, Bucharest Militari, Bucharest Balotesti, Brasov, Timisoara, Sibiu). The group employs 16,500, of which 770 in units across Romania.
