Homebase relocation triggers plans for a new Bedfordshire retail park
Official plans to build a new retail park in Leighton to house the town’s Homebase DIY store have officially been submitted to Central Beds Council for approval.
Developers, The Claymore Group, held a public consultation on the Grovebury Road plan earlier this year and won the support of residents and shoppers but not the town’s retailers who fear the scheme will destroy town centre businesses.
The proposal for a retail warehousing development includes a garden centre area and a restaurant/cafe/public house. Claymore has already had interest from Pets @ Home, Dreams and Benson Beds, in taking units alongside a relocated Homebase.
The DIY store must find new premises in light of Tesco being given permission to expand on their site in Vimy Road.
