Heavy Rain And Back To School Impacted Footfall Last Week
Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 36 (04/09 - 10/09) advising that heavy rain and back to school impacted footfall in retail destinations.
Springboard Index - Week 36 2022
2022 vs 2021 = +5.6%
2022 vs 2019 = -13.3%
Week-on-week = -6.5%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
Heavy rain on most days last week, together with the start of the new school term, impacted footfall across UK retail destinations last week, with a significant drop in decline in footfall in all three key destination types.
The week began positively, however, on each day between Tuesday and Friday footfall was substantially below the previous week. Footfall largely recovered by the weekend when the rain cleared, although this was wholly driven by increases in activity in high streets.
Footfall in all types of town declined last week, particularly in coastal and historic towns which benefited from bank holiday visitors in the week before, with the most modest reduction in activity occurring in Central London, albeit that it was still noticeable. In contrast, Springboard's Central London "Back to the Office" benchmark rose from the week before, reflecting the increase in employees returning to their offices following the end of the summer break.
