German Lockdown Closes Home Improvement Stores & Garden Centres
The national lockdown in Germany has been extended for a further two weeks, until 14th February.
Home improvement stores and garden centres across the country have been closed since 16th December were expected to reopen on 10th January. Trading restrictions were extended to the end of January as a result of high coronavirus infection rates, although DIY stores were allowed to offer click and collect services in most states during that time.
During Germany's first lockdown in April 2020, home improvement stores and garden centres were allowed to trade, with the exception of those trading in four federal states.
Industry associations are campaigning for a change in the rules, advising that gardening has a positive effect on mental health.
Data from GfK shows that consumer confidence in Germany is eroding under the strict lockdown and the propensity to buy is in freefall.
