Gen Z Driving Demand For Sustainable Shipping

- InXpress reveals that sustainability and social impact now rival speed and price in Gen Z and Millennial purchase decisions
New global research* from international shipping and logistics expert InXpress highlights the growing demand for brands to not only ship fast, but ship with purpose.
InXpress’ study of Gen Z and Millennial purchasing habits reveals that 33% of Gen Z consumers consider sustainability very important when making purchasing decisions, while 25% consider it important. Moreover, 1 in 2 millennials surveyed claim they pay attention to sustainability when buying products, echoing Gen Z’s sentiment. These findings suggest to retailers that eco-conscious practices are no longer optional but sought after by this growing demographic of consumers.
“Shipping is no longer just a transaction; it’s part of the brand story,” comments Jon White, Chief Commercial Officer at InXpress. “Gen Z desire more than convenience. They want to see their personal values reflected at every stage of the buying journey, including the last mile.”
“Gen Z and Millennials have the biggest spending power in the world. Together, they make up over half of the global population, so it is essential for businesses to connect with them. This Earth Day, we’re encouraging businesses, large and small, to rethink their logistics choices. Prioristing sustainability as much as price and speed of delivery is the best way to connect with this generation of consumers.”
Other notable findings include:
- 1 in 3 consumers say it’s important that brands support good causes, signaling that social impact and sustainability go hand-in-hand in the eyes of younger shoppers.
- While price remains the top priority in shipping choices, speed of delivery is a close second, showing that affordability and efficiency must work in tandem with environmental responsibility.
- Social media is the #1 source of purchase inspiration, especially among Gen Z, emphasizing the need for brands to showcase their sustainable credentials and brand values online to reach this demographic of consumers.
- Instagram is the top social platform for both Millennials and Gen Z, with TikTok being the second preferred platform for Gen Z (34.3%) and Youtube for Millennials (12.8%).
As global e-commerce continues to surge, the carbon footprint of deliveries is coming under increased scrutiny. InXpress, a company that helps businesses of all sizes streamline national and international shipping, is working with partners to offer greener delivery options, support carbon offsetting, and reduce packaging waste across its network.
* The global study conducted by InXpress researched 120 Gen Z and Millenials across the UK, US, South Africa, Australia, Canada, France, Hon Kong, India, and the Netherlands.
