Frenzied Friday and Super Saturday Retail Spend Predicted to Hit £2.2bn
Research from the Centre for Retail Research and Voucher Codes reveals that shoppers are expected to spend £2.2bn over Friday 21st December (Frenzied Friday) and Saturday 22nd December (Super Saturday).
With only four shopping days to complete purchases of gifts, food and drink for the festivities, Frenzied Friday is a day where two types of shopper converge: the well organised are completing their food and drink purchases and the disorganised are starting to realise they don’t have long left to get everything they need in time for Christmas.
Because many people will have started their Christmas break already, this will be an important shopping day both online and in stores.
Similarly, the following day will also be a busy one – especially for UK high streets, with 10.1m shoppers hitting stores to spend a total of £1.38bn. Any online orders placed on this date are unlikely to make it to shoppers’ doors before Christmas Day, as a result Super Saturday is expected to mainly be a day for in-store shoppers.
Over the past few years, next-day delivery has become the norm for many online retailers – which means the last weekend before Christmas this year will not just result in a boost for high street stores but also for those online retailers able to offer delivery before Christmas.
Statistics: Frenzied Friday & Super Saturday
- £2.88bnin total to be spent over the two days
- Festive shoppers set to splurge £2.29bn of this in-store
- High streets will be packed with 20.4m shoppers
- On Frenzied Friday, shoppers in the UK predicted to spend £1.44m per minute online and in-store
- UK consumers expected to spend £2.38m per minute online and in-store on Super Saturday

Jimmy New, VoucherCodes director of marketing, said: “Super Saturday is one of the most important days in the retail calendar as millions of people finalise their Christmas preparations.
“Many retailers are making the most of the increased online spending on Friday and are continuing to offer delivery in time for Christmas, while high street stores will be looking to capitalise on the increased footfall with last-minute deals and incentives.”
