Focus supports fire safety campaign

DIY chain is keen to help raise awareness of dangers and promote fire safety products, as part of government scheme this autumn.

Focus DIY will work in conjunction with the government's October 2010 Fire Kills Campaign, running offers and promotions on a number of First Alert safety products both in-store and online.

In particular, Focus aims to target new university students and first-time homeowners who may be unaware of the necessary fire precautions, which must be taken.

The move follows new research by the retailer, which revealed just how ill-prepared much of the nation is in the event of a fire. It found that 51% of people check their smoke alarms only occasionally, with 25% never checking them at all.

Focus project manager Nasim Valli said: "This new research just goes to show that a large percentage of people are just not prepared in the event of a fire. It is crucial that we work to support the government's ongoing fire safety campaigns to raise awareness and ensure everyone possesses the necessary equipment. A few inexpensive and simple measures minimise risk by ensuring that the right equipment is always at hand."

Focus is also trying to raise awareness about carbon monoxide gas. The highly poisonous gas, which you cannot see, smell or taste is one of the greatest dangers in a new home. However, Focus' research found that just 36% of the population had installed a carbon monoxide detector in their homes.

Focus will run promotions on First Alert smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide alarms throughout September, with prices starting at £13.19.
