Focus & WHSmith named as worst retail stores

High street giant WH Smith and troubled DIY chain Focus have been named as the lousiest stores in Britain.

The research by consumer watchdog Which? found that stationer and book store WH Smith was expensive and cramped.

Focus, which is in administration, also scored just 54 out of 100, with shoppers slating its customer service. Electrical store PC World and sister chain Currys Digital were in the bottom 10 as well, along with budget fashion chain TK Maxx, department store Bhs and value shop Poundstretcher.

Top of the shops was electrical group Richer Sounds which scored a mark of 86 thanks to its value for money and staff who customers praised as friendly and knowledgeable.

Which? editor Martyn Hocking said the best stores had quality products and good customer service. He added: “Shops at the bottom of the table would be well advised to follow that lead.”

WH Smith said it is proud of the service it provides. The firm added it was surprised by the Which? report because it did not tally with findings in other independent surveys. Focus declined to comment.
