Dulux Announces Colour of the Year 2021

Colour of the Year 2021

Dulux has revealed its Colour Of The Year for 2021 is Brave GroundTM.

A panel of decorating experts took inspiration from nature in selecting the warm and grounding shade. The natural tone creates a neutral canvas allowing other colours to shine in the home.

Adapting to its surroundings, Brave GroundTM also flexes in tone depending on the time of day and setting, creating a subtly responsive environment that’s reflective of people’s growing desire to align how they live with our planet.

Four supporting palettes provide decorators with the opportunity to give their customers inspiration, showing how Brave GroundTM can be used to decorate rooms in complementary colour schemes that create multi-functional but also nurturing home environments.

These consist of:

  • EARTH - Echoing the tones of the sea, sky and soil

  • TRUST - Unifying earth tones of warm greys and browns

  • TIMELESS - Inspiring yellows and ochres to bring positivity

  • EXPRESSIVE - Stand-out reds and pinks to energize spaces

Panel Chair Heleen van Gent, Head of the AkzoNobel Global Aesthetic Centre, which chooses the colours, explains: “The past year has seen unprecedented change to all our lives. For many it has transformed the function of their homes. They are now environments to work, learn and relax. But, above all, during these challenging times, homes provide valuable respite. And that is at the heart of our Dulux Colour Of The Year choice for 2021 - Brave GroundTM.”

Karen Wilkinson, Marketing Lead at Dulux Trade adds: “The organic tone of Brave GroundTM will allow decorators to talk to customers about creating a really comforting environment within their homes. Combining it with the supporting palettes opens up a whole range of possibilities from energizing reds and pinks to unifying earth tones of warm greys and browns, perfect to help customers find a colour scheme for any space.”

Dulux Trade is committed to equipping decorators with the tools and training they need to support their customers when making colour choices. The Colour Of The Year and four supporting palettes provide decorators with the opportunity to really engage with homeowners following the disruption of the pandemic.

Karen adds: “To support decorators in talking to customers about colour, we’ve created a Colour Of The Year decorator guide, a handy booklet that can be used when guiding customers to make those important colour decisions, so they are able to show how Brave GroundTM can work in any customers’ home.

“We’re also helping professionals to be more colour confident with colour and design training courses run by Dulux Academy.

“The range of courses has been expanded in 2020, and for the first time ever, now includes face-to-face and online ColourFuturesTM courses. These sessions give decorators the chance to gain more insight into how we predict colours for future trends and how we choose names for our colours and can be attended in person at Dulux Academy in Slough or virtually through Dulux Academy Live.”
